Succession occurs in natural ecosystems. Describe and explain how succession occurs.

Succession is the process by which ecosystems change and develop over time. It typically begins with pioneer species, which are the first organisms to colonize disturbed or barren environments. These species modify the environment, making it more hospitable for subsequent species.

Pioneer species, such as lichens and mosses, can break down rocks and accumulate organic matter, facilitating soil formation. As these organisms die and decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients, allowing other species to establish themselves. This process continues as new species arrive, often outcompeting the pioneers, which leads to an increase in biodiversity.

Over time, the environment becomes more suitable for a variety of organisms, leading to a climax community - a stable and mature ecosystem with a diverse range of species. This increase in diversity and stability is indicative of the ecosystem’s development.
