Describe the structure and function of the nucleus.

The nucleus can be described in terms of its structure and functions:

**Structure**:
- The nucleus is enclosed by a double membrane known as the nuclear envelope, which contains pores that regulate the transport of materials in and out of the nucleus.
- It contains chromatin, which consists of DNA and proteins, and may condense to form chromosomes during cell division.
- Inside the nucleus, there is a nucleolus, which is responsible for the production of ribosomal RNA (rRNA).

**Function**:
- The primary function of the nucleus is to hold and protect the genetic material (DNA) of the cell. This genetic material carries the instructions for protein synthesis.
- The nucleus also plays a key role in controlling cellular activities by regulating gene expression.
- During protein synthesis, mRNA is transcribed from DNA in the nucleus and then translated into proteins in the cytoplasm. 
- It is also responsible for the assembly of ribosomes, as the nucleolus produces rRNA, which combines with proteins to form ribosomes.
