The alkaline solution is produced as follows:
At the negative electrode, hydrogen ions are discharged and gain electrons to form hydrogen gas:
2H++2e−→H2
At the positive electrode, chloride ions are discharged/oxidised to form chlorine gas:
2Cl−→Cl2+2e−
As a result, sodium ions and hydroxide ions remain in solution, forming sodium hydroxide.
