EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, occurs as a result of the body's need to recover after intense physical activity.
Caused due to vigorous (anaerobic) exercise: During high-intensity workouts, the body primarily relies on anaerobic respiration due to insufficient oxygen levels. This leads to the production of energy without adequate oxygen.
Lactic acid is built up: The anaerobic process results in the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles, which must be cleared out for recovery.
Need to maintain an elevated breathing rate: To facilitate the breakdown of lactic acid and replenish oxygen levels, the body continues to breathe heavily even after exercise has stopped.
To repay the oxygen debt: The increased oxygen consumption post-exercise helps in returning the body to its resting state and restoring energy levels.
