FSH levels remain low, preventing the maturation of an egg or follicle. If FSH levels were high, follicles would mature and possibly lead to ovulation.
LH levels remain low initially, which means that ovulation does not occur until a peak in LH levels signals it to happen. The surge in LH triggers the release of the egg.
Additionally, progesterone inhibits FSH and oestrogen inhibits FSH, preventing premature ovulation by controlling hormone levels.
Furthermore, high levels of oestrogen help to maintain the lining of the uterus, preparing it for potential implantation.
