Sex cells, or gametes, are haploid cells, meaning they contain half the number of chromosomes. When a sperm cell from the male fuses with an egg cell from the female, they combine their genetic information, resulting in a diploid fertilised egg. This fertilised egg contains the full number of chromosomes necessary for the development of a new organism.
