The concentration of hydrogen ions
is related to pH by the formula:
[H+]=10−pH
For Solution X (pH 3.40):
[H+]=10−3.40
For Solution Y (pH 4.40):
[H+]=10−4.40
To compare the two concentrations:
[H+]Y[H+]X=10−4.4010−3.40=10(4.40−3.40)=101=10
Thus, the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution X is ten times higher than that in solution Y.
