One significant difference in migration patterns between the years c1500–c1700 and c1700–c1900 lies in the reasons for migration and the demographics involved.

During the c1500–c1700 period, migration was significantly influenced by the search for better economic opportunities, largely driven by agricultural changes and the rise of market economies. Many individuals migrated from rural areas to cities seeking work in burgeoning industries or joining the early trade networks. This period also saw considerable migration due to religious persecution, with groups such as Huguenots fleeing France.

In contrast, the period c1700–c1900 experienced a more organized and larger-scale migration, especially from Europe to the Americas and the British colonies. Economic factors remained a primary driver, but this era introduced mass migrations fueled by events such as the Industrial Revolution, which created a large labor demand in urban centers, and the allure of land and opportunities in the New World.

Additionally, this later period saw a greater involvement of government policies in influencing migration patterns, as states began to encourage emigration to populate colonies and alleviate social issues at home. Technological advancements, such as steamships, also facilitated this increased movement of people across the Atlantic, marking a clear difference in migration dynamics between the two periods.
