One significant consequence of the Fort Laramie Treaty was the establishment of the Great Sioux Reservation. This designated land included the Black Hills, which were regarded as sacred by the Sioux Nation. The Treaty aimed to provide the Sioux with exclusive rights to this territory, thereby protecting their way of life from encroaching settlers. However, this protection was short-lived as gold was discovered in the Black Hills, leading to increased tensions and conflict with the U.S. government.

Another important consequence was the initial commitment of the U.S. government to honor the sovereignty of Native American tribes over their lands. The Treaty allowed tribes to govern themselves and prohibited white settlers from encroaching on the reservation without consent. Unfortunately, as U.S. expansion continued, this commitment proved to be largely ignored, resulting in further loss of land and resources for the Native Americans.
