When light travels from air (a less dense medium) into glass or water (denser mediums), it slows down due to the change in medium. This change in speed causes the light rays to bend towards the normal line, which is an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence. This bending occurs because of Snell's law, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant for a particular pair of media.
