Herschel's experiment involved passing sunlight through a prism to analyze its spectrum.
He noted a temperature increase just beyond the red part of the spectrum, indicating the presence of infrared rays, which were previously unknown.
Similarly, Ritter's experiment used sensitive silver chloride paper and also a prism to investigate light beyond the violet end of the spectrum, observing blackening of the paper, which indicated ultraviolet radiation. Both scientists’ methods showcased that light extends beyond visible wavelengths.
