To demonstrate that the rod is charged, you could bring the charged rod near to some small pieces of paper. If the rod is charged, the pieces of paper will be attracted to the rod. Alternatively, you could hold the rod close to a neutral object, and you might observe that the object either moves towards the rod or moves away, indicating an interaction of electric charge.
