Corries, also known as cirques, begin their formation in areas where snow accumulates in north-facing hollows. This is especially pronounced during the winter months when snow falls more heavily than during the summer, leading to an accumulation of snow.

The initial process starts with seasonal snow accumulation. When the snow compacts under its own weight, it transforms into ice. This ice can then move due to gravity, eroding the landscape beneath it. The movement of ice is characterized by 'plucking' where the ice freezes onto the rock, pulling loose fragments from the sides of the hollow as it shifts, creating a deepened area.

As the glacier moves, it scours out the back of the hollow, creating a steep wall. Erosion results in a bowl-shaped depression known as a corrie. As the glacier retreats, meltwater may collect at the bottom, forming a tarn, which can be seen in the diagram.
