Explain the reasons why the Union had an impact on Scotland, to 1740.

Economic effects – negative
The textile industry suffered, in particular on relation to competition. This led to a decline in sales and profits for Scottish manufacturers.

The English market was competitive and kept up with the modern methods of production. This put some Scottish manufacturing out of business.

Economic effects – positive
Scottish tobacco merchants became wealthy by 1740. This was established from the tobacco trade in Scotland, in the Caribbean, so that the English market traded further with the highlands to allow merchants to prosper.

English markets helped black cattle and sheep learned about prices and improved farming techniques. This was a reflection of the influence of English practice on Scottish manufacturing.

Political effects
Effective Jacobite leaders had become less strong in support for the Crown. This led to a centralisation of power in Scotland.

Scottish Parliament was dissolved in 1707, leading to long-term resentment over reinforcing differences to Scotland.,
