HIV/AIDS: impact on populations

HIV/AIDS has been a major global health issue since the 1980s. Today, it is still of foremost significance in many countries with the problem mainly concentrated in the continent of Africa. However, with the advancements in medicine, it is no longer a death sentence. Many people who have HIV/AIDS can live a long life by taking daily medication. This is called Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).

One of the most devastating impacts of HIV/AIDS is the role of whole generations of people in communities hardest hit by the epidemic. In this regard, it is often children who feel the impact the hardest: if they have to care for parents or older relatives, they are required to lose out on their education to support them. The HIV/AIDS epidemic therefore has had a severe and wide-ranging impact upon households across Africa.  South America, Asia, and Europe have all been affected more than wealthier countries.

The vast majority of Africans living with HIV/AIDS are between the ages of 15 and 49, which is often the age bracket in which HIV/AIDS becomes progressively worse. Educational institutions, schools and factories have constantly had to compete against the needs of the household.  In Asia, one parent may refuse to take care of themselves and allow the rest of the family to bear the burden. In this way, homes with adults who have HIV/AIDS have been forced to report their satisfaction with how they live, which is lower than households without such individuals. The economic productivity of a country with a high rate of HIV/AIDS is significantly reduced due to the loss of sustainable work and income generation that individuals with HIV/AIDS could bring.

Discrimination is another major issue for people living with HIV/AIDS. Previously, across the continent of Africa, many nations have shunned their HIV/AIDS citizens due to the belief that it is a shameful condition. People are much more likely to resist admitting they have HIV/AIDS and less likely to seek treatment. Nations blighted by the virus have really struggled to educate people about the condition and tackle the discrimination that exists.

HIV/AIDS: the global outlook

In 2000, world leaders committed to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a 15-year initiative to address global problems including poverty, hunger and disease. The MDGs consisted of eight goals, one of which was to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other infectious diseases. In relation to HIV/AIDS, the world struggled to meet the targets set by the MDGs: as follow-up to the MDGs, the world is striving towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with 169 targets attached.

While there have been advances, a UNAIDS report from 2021 showed that HIV/AIDS related deaths have declined down by 33% since 2010 – as access to treatment has grown and is praised in the delivering service delivery model of Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), in particular for mothers who transmit HIV/AIDS and as a result can keep their children.
