Never Let Me Go: Plot Summary
Kathy H., the narrator, reflects on her life as a "carer" for "donors" who give away their organs.
Kathy recalls her time at Hailsham, an idyllic school with guardians like Miss Geraldine, Miss Lucy, and Miss Emily, the headmistress.
Kathy befriends Ruth, a leader among the students, and Tommy, a boy prone to temper tantrums.
Art classes are important at Hailsham, and students submit their work to Madame's Gallery.
Kathy buys a cassette tape by Judy Bridgewater, with a song called "Never Let Me Go", which deeply moves her.
Kathy is caught dancing to the tape by Madame, who is seen crying, leading Kathy to wonder if Madame pities the students.
Students learn they are clones destined to become carers and donors, giving their organs to benefit non-cloned humans.
Miss Lucy tells the students about their future roles more directly than the other guardians, causing her to leave the school abruptly.
Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy leave Hailsham and move to the Cottages, where they read, form relationships, and prepare for their future roles.
A trip to Norfolk with friends leads to disappointment for Ruth, who learns her "possible" clone parent is not real.
Kathy and Tommy find a copy of Kathy's lost Judy Bridgewater cassette in a Norfolk store.
Kathy realizes she loves Tommy, but he continues his relationship with Ruth.
Tommy creates drawings in hopes of getting a deferral from donating if he can prove he and Kathy are in love.
Ruth dismisses the idea of deferrals but later regrets keeping Kathy and Tommy apart.
After years, Kathy becomes Ruth's carer, and Ruth urges Kathy to pursue a relationship with Tommy before dying after her second donation.
Kathy and Tommy become lovers and visit Madame and Miss Emily to seek a deferral.
Miss Emily reveals Hailsham was meant to reform clone treatment, but it has shut down due to lack of funding.
The deferral for couples in love is confirmed to be a false rumour.
Tommy has a breakdown after learning the truth and later dies after his fourth donation.
Kathy transitions to being a donor, cherishing her memories of Ruth, Tommy, and Hailsham.
