Crimea

● From the late 1700s onwards, Crimea belonged to Russia (The Soviet Union)
● It was eventually included as part of the independent state of Ukraine in 1991 which
was controversial due to the large number of ethnic Russians still living there
● In 2014, a brief period of civil conflict in Crimea ended w/ territory being annexed by Russia
○ Condemned by the international community but no steps taken to prevent it
