2.2.4 Properties of Ionic Compounds

What Are Ionic Compounds?

infoNote

Ionic compounds are made of metals and non-metals that bond together by transferring electrons. This forms a regular lattice structure where positive and negative ions are held together by strong ionic bonds.

Properties of Ionic Compounds:

  • High Melting and Boiling Points: Ionic compounds have strong bonds that require a lot of energy to break, so they melt and boil at high temperatures.
  • Conduct Electricity When Molten or Dissolved: When ionic compounds are melted or dissolved in water, the ions are free to move, allowing them to conduct electricity. In their solid form, they don't conduct electricity because the ions are fixed in place. image
