6.2.4 The Effect of Changing Conditions on Equilibrium

Le Chatelier's Principle:

infoNote

Le Chatelier's Principle helps to predict how the position of an equilibrium will shift when the conditions of a reaction are changed.

  • The principle states: "If the conditions of an equilibrium are changed, the equilibrium will shift its position to counteract that change."
  • The direction of this shift, either towards the reactants or products, depends on which side of the equilibrium can best counteract the imposed change.

Factors Influencing the Shift:

  • The equilibrium position will shift in different directions based on factors such as the number of moles on each side of the equation and the energy changes (enthalpy) associated with the reactions.
infoNote

The three main conditions that affect the position of equilibrium are temperature, pressure, and concentration.
