7.1.1 Magnetism

Magnets

infoNote

Every magnet has two poles—North and South.

Attraction and Repulsion:

  • Like Poles Repel: When you bring two north poles or two south poles close together, they push away from each other.
  • Opposite Poles Attract: When a north pole and a south pole are brought together, they pull toward each other

  • Magnetic Field: The area around a magnet where magnetic forces can be felt is called the magnetic field. The strength of the field is strongest at the poles and weakens as you move away from the magnet.
  • Real-World Examples: Magnets are used in various applications, from compasses, which use the Earth's magnetic field to point north, to electric motors, which rely on magnetic forces to operate.
