Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer, is sent to Eel Marsh House to sort out the affairs of a deceased woman, Alice Drablow. In the isolated house, he starts seeing the ghost of the Woman in Black, a tragic figure named Jennet Humfrye. Jennet lost her son in a marsh accident and now haunts the town, bringing death to children whenever she is seen.
Despite warnings, Arthur investigates and uncovers her sad story. He returns to London, marries, and has a child, but the Woman in Black reappears and causes an accident that kills his wife and son. Arthur is left haunted by these events for the rest of his life.
