Dynamic Equilibrium-Reversible Reaction
Introduction:
In chemistry, some reactions can proceed in both the forward and reverse directions. Such reactions are known as reversible reactions.
Key Points
Reversible Reactions: Reversible reactions are chemical processes where reactants can form products, and products can revert to reactants.
Conditions and Equilibrium: If the conditions in a reversible reaction are not altered, the reaction eventually reaches a balance point called equilibrium.
Equilibrium: At equilibrium, the forward and reverse reactions occur at exactly the same rate. It's like a dynamic balance.
Constant Concentrations: At equilibrium, the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant. However, they are not necessarily equal.
Dynamic Nature: Equilibrium is dynamic because even though the concentrations stay the same, the reactions are still ongoing.
Illustration
Consider the reversible reaction: A ⇌ B
Initially, only A is present, and it starts converting into B.
Over time, as B is formed, it also starts converting back to A.
This process continues until a point is reached where the rates of A converting to B and B converting to A become equal.
At this point, the reaction is in dynamic equilibrium, and the concentrations of A and B remain constant.
Conclusion
Reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium are common in chemistry, where reactants and products coexist but reach a state of balance where concentrations remain constant.
