Molar Volume

Introduction:

  • The molar volume is the volume occupied by one mole of any gas and remains constant for all gases at the same temperature and pressure. It is typically measured in litres per mole (L/mol).

Application in Reactions

  • Molar volume is a useful concept in calculating volumes of reactants and products in chemical reactions involving gases. Since one mole of any gas occupies the same volume under specific conditions, molar volume helps determine volume ratios in reactions.
lightbulbExample

Example: Ammonia Production

  • Consider the reaction for ammonia (NH₃) production from nitrogen and hydrogen:
  • N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) → 2NH₃(g)
  • To calculate the volume of ammonia produced when 400 cm³ of nitrogen reacts with excess hydrogen:
    • The balanced equation shows that one mole of nitrogen produces two moles of ammonia.
    • Since gases are at the same temperature and pressure, one mole of each gas occupies the same volume.
    • The molar ratio of nitrogen to ammonia is 1:2.
    • Thus, when 400 cm³ of nitrogen reacts, we produce double that volume of ammonia, which is 800 cm³.
