Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Plot

Meeting Mr Hyde

  • The story begins with Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield walking through an alley and noticing a mysterious door that leads to Dr. Jekyll's house. Enfield recounts an incident where he witnessed a young girl being trampled by a strange man, Mr. Hyde.
  • Mr. Utterson becomes fixated on Mr. Hyde, especially after discovering that Dr. Jekyll has bequeathed all his possessions to Hyde. He investigates Hyde's background and suspects foul play.

Concern for Dr. Jekyll

  • Two weeks later, Mr. Utterson meets Dr. Jekyll and expresses his concerns about the will. Jekyll dismisses these concerns, but his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic.
  • A year later, Sir Danvers Carew is brutally murdered by Mr. Hyde, witnessed by a maid. A letter addressed to Utterson is found on the victim's body.
  • Dr. Jekyll's health deteriorates, and he reassures Utterson that he is free from Mr. Hyde. However, Utterson suspects that Jekyll may have forged a letter from Hyde.

The Death of Lanyon

  • Dr. Lanyon, Jekyll's old friend, falls seriously ill and suggests that Jekyll is the cause of his ailment. Lanyon leaves a letter to Utterson, to be opened upon Jekyll's death or disappearance.
  • Jekyll becomes reclusive, and Utterson and Enfield witness him in a state of extreme fear through his window.

Prose

The Death of Jekyll

  • Poole, Jekyll's servant, seeks Utterson's help to enter Jekyll's laboratory. Inside, they find a small, deformed man identified as Mr. Hyde, twitching and holding a vial.

  • A confession by Dr. Jekyll and a revised will are discovered. Hyde's name is crossed out and replaced with Utterson's.

Resolution and Explanation

  • Dr. Lanyon's letter reveals the shocking transformation from Hyde to Jekyll, witnessed by Lanyon. In another document, Jekyll details his experiment to separate his good and evil sides, which spiralled out of control, leading to the destruction of his own identity.
