The Wireless Set

Summary

In the isolated valley of Tronvik, Howie returns home from whaling in the Antarctic, bringing a wireless set that both fascinates and perplexes the community. As World War Two begins, the wireless becomes a source of both information and scepticism. The community is captivated by the propaganda of Lord Haw-Haw, but they eventually switch off the wireless after more lies. When news of Howie's death arrives, Betsy and Hugh, her father-in-law, discuss daily chores and silently acknowledge their loss. Old Hugh ends the story by destroying the wireless set with an axe, symbolising the community's rejection of misinformation and propaganda.
