Waterfalls (Formation)
Definition:
A waterfall is a natural feature where a river or stream flows over a steep vertical drop, often creating a picturesque cascade of water.
Formation:
Hard and Soft Rock Layers: Waterfalls typically form where a river or stream encounters alternating layers of hard and soft rock.
Erosion: The river flows over the hard rock layer and begins to erode the softer rock layer beneath it.
Differential Erosion: As the softer rock is eroded more rapidly, it creates a step or cliff in the riverbed.
Plunge Pool: The water falls from the cliff and into a plunge pool at the base, which is deeper due to erosion.
Repetition: Over time, the process repeats as the river continues to erode the soft rock layer, causing the waterfall to retreat upstream.
Formation of Features: Additional erosional features, like rapids and potholes, can form downstream from the waterfall.
Characteristics:
Waterfalls exhibit a dramatic vertical drop of water, often accompanied by a roaring sound and mist.
Examples:
The Angel Falls in Venezuela and Niagara Falls in North America are famous examples of waterfalls.
Summary:
Waterfalls form when rivers or streams encounter alternating layers of hard and soft rock, resulting in a dramatic vertical drop of water.
Erosion of the soft rock layer beneath creates the characteristic plunge pool and often leads to the retreat of the waterfall upstream.
Waterfalls are both natural wonders and sources of human use, including power generation and tourism.
