Impeachment Process:

• Investigation (House of Representatives): The House of Representatives, by a simple majority, can initiate the impeachment process by investigating alleged wrongdoing by the president.
• Vote to Proceed (House of Representatives): The House of Representatives votes to proceed with the impeachment process. A simple majority is required for this stage.
• Senate Trial: The case is then transferred to the Senate, where the president is placed on trial.
• Vote to Convict (Senate): The Senate votes on whether to convict the president. A 'super-majority' of two-thirds of the Senate is necessary for a conviction.

Impeachment of President Trump (2019):

The Democrats accused President Trump of pressuring President Zelensky of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, a potential Democratic rival, during a phone conversation in July 2019. Trump was alleged to have threatened to withhold military aid to Ukraine to secure the investigation.

Impeachment Verdict (2020):

• President Trump was acquitted of both charges by the Republican-controlled Senate on February 5, 2020.
• On the charge of abuse of power, the vote was 52-48 in Trump's favour, with only Senator Mitt Romney dissenting from the Republican ranks.
• On the charge of obstruction of Congress, the vote was 53-47 in favour of Trump, with unanimous support from Republican senators.
• Trump became one of four presidents to face impeachment, alongside Bill Clinton (1999), Richard Nixon (1974), and Andrew Johnson (1868).
• None of the impeachment proceedings resulted in a conviction. Clinton and Johnson avoided a super-majority verdict, and Nixon resigned before formal impeachment.
