In my view, Mr Reynolds finds it revolting that Miss Evers thought it was alright to split up the boys. Additionally, Mr Reynolds is put in a position where he must choose one boy over the other, which he finds troubling.

I like Mr Reynolds because he is willing to give the boys a home and tries to ensure their well-being. He shows concern for their feelings and appears to have a sense of humor. However, I find him somewhat abrupt with Miss Evers, which can be off-putting.

Step 5

Imagine that you are either David or Tucky. Write a short letter to your family at home in London. Based on what you have read in this extract, explain how you are feeling and describe some of the things that have happened to you since you came to live in the countryside.

Answer

Dear Family,

I hope this letter finds you well. Since arriving here in the countryside, it feels very strange. There’s a lot of greenery and I’m staying with a kind man named Mr Reynolds, who is willing to take care of me. I feel a bit scared and homesick because it's so different from London.

I miss my friends and the noise of the city. But today, Mr Reynolds and his dog took me on a walk, and it was calming to be outside in nature. I'm trying to make the best of this situation while I wait for everything to get better.

Love, David/Tucky
