The greenhouse effect occurs when the sun's energy reaches the Earth and is absorbed by the surface, warming the planet. However, some of this radiation is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which leads to an increase in the Earth's temperature. This process is exacerbated by human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, that increase the concentration of these gases.
