Inhalation begins when the intercostal muscles contract, causing the ribcage to move up and out. Simultaneously, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This expansion of the ribcage and downward movement of the diaphragm increases the volume of the lungs.
As a result, the pressure inside the lungs decreases compared to the atmospheric pressure. This pressure difference causes air to flow into the lungs, filling them with oxygen that is essential for respiration.
