Begin the test by adding a few drops of freshly-prepared iron(II) sulfate solution to a clean test tube. This compound will facilitate the formation of a distinct reaction product if nitrate ions are present.

Carefully trickle concentrated sulfuric acid down the side of the test tube containing the iron(II) sulfate solution. Keep the test tube in a slanted position to allow the acid to form a distinct layer above the iron(II) sulfate solution without mixing them.
