One method by which nitrogen is fixed in nature is through the action of bacteria. Certain types of bacteria, such as those found in the roots of leguminous plants like clover and beans, convert atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) into ammonia (NH₃) through a process called nitrogen fixation. This ammonia can then be utilized by plants to grow.
