Anodising aluminium is a process that results in the formation of a thick, protective layer of aluminium oxide on the surface of the metal. This layer is beneficial for several reasons. One significant reason for anodising is to increase the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of aluminium. The aluminium oxide layer formed is very hard and provides a protective barrier that shields the underlying metal from environmental factors, thus prolonging its lifespan.

Additionally, anodising makes the surface electrically insulating, which prevents unwanted electrical conductivity. This property is particularly useful in applications where electrical insulation is critical.

Furthermore, the anodised surface can absorb dyes, allowing for attractive coloring and aesthetic finishes, which are often desirable in consumer products.
