Answer
The Electric Arc Furnace operates by using cold scrap iron or steel as the major component of the charge. This charge is combined with small amounts of lime and carbon. The heating of the furnace is achieved through the use of electric arcs generated between carbon electrodes and the charge materials.
As the electric arc generates intense heat, the materials within the furnace melt down, and oxides and impurities from the scrap iron form molten slag. After adjusting the composition adequately, the slag is removed, and the molten steel is tapped from the bottom of the furnace.
Step 2
For the furnace selected at 2(a)(i), name the material produced and suggest one suitable application for this material.

Answer
The Electric Arc Furnace primarily produces steel. One suitable application for this steel is in the manufacturing of high-strength metal cutting tools and hammer heads due to its desirable mechanical properties.
