A single-acting pneumatic cylinder is designed to develop thrust or output force in one direction only. This means the piston is pushed outward by compressed air but is returned to its initial position either by a fitted spring or another external force, such as a weight. The cylinder has a single port that allows air to enter, enabling the piston to move to the desired position.

In contrast, a double-acting pneumatic cylinder allows for air pressure to be applied alternately to both sides of the piston. This enables movement in both directions. Each side of the piston has a port that receives compressed air, allowing for more versatile applications. To move a load efficiently, the ports can be switched between air in and air exhaust, allowing for actions such as opening and closing a gate.
