Set up an electric bell in a vacuum bell jar connected to a battery.
Turn on the bell, and observe it ringing while air is present in the jar. Sound is heard clearly.
Then, use a vacuum pump to remove air from the jar.
Once the air has been evacuated, try to ring the bell again. It will ring but sound cannot be heard inside the jar, proving that sound needs a medium as it cannot travel in a vacuum.
