Clean away the sand of the beach

And open the door to autumn,

Put on your uniform

And the shirt that will peck

At your small young neck

And take out the shoes from the box

Their leather smell like a sauce to you.

You are six years old.

I was proud when I saw your bravery

On your way to the bus stop.

"Don't kiss me, Mam", is what you said,

"I'll wait by myself."

I turned away from my young child

Who had grown overnight

Under the warm morning mist.

And I walked in home

And watched from behind the curtain

To see that he left safely

And hoped that he'd be swallowed by learning

And that he'd have a thirsty, limitless curiosity.

He is six years old.

On you go now

Be happy and know that you are loved by us.

Little wise old man

Who was here before

With his brown eyes

wide with wonder

At the joy of being alive.
