Respiration

infoNote

Respiration: The release of energy from food.

  • Respiration is a biochemical process.
  • It takes place in the mitochondria of the cell. image

Types of Respiration

infoNote

Aerobic respiration: The release of energy from food using oxygen.

infoNote

Anaerobic respiration: The release of energy from food without oxygen.

Digestion and Respiration

  1. Chewing and saliva in the mouth break down food (like bread).
  2. The food moves to the stomach, where stomach acid breaks it down further.
  3. Nutrients like glucose are absorbed into the blood in the small intestine.
  4. The blood carries glucose to the body's cells.
  5. Mitochondria inside the cells convert these nutrients into energy through respiration.
  6. Respiration creates waste products like carbon dioxide and water vapour, which are removed from the body.

Respiration Equation

infoNote

Word Equation: Glucose + Oxygen —> (energy released) —> Carbon Dioxide + Water Vapour

infoNote

Chemical Equation: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O

Testing for Carbon Dioxide with Limewater

infoNote

Test:

  • Limewater is a clear, colourless liquid.
  • We exhale carbon dioxide.
  • Blowing into limewater makes it turn cloudy or milky. Theory:

Role of CO₂ in respiration: When we breathe, our body uses oxygen and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. This carbon dioxide is exhaled.

Using limewater to see CO₂: When you exhale into limewater, it reacts with the carbon dioxide in your breath. This reaction turns the limewater cloudy or milky, showing that carbon dioxide is present.

This simple test helps visually demonstrate that carbon dioxide is a by-product of the body's process of generating energy, i.e. a by-product of respiration.
