The Functions of the Lymphatic System

• To collect tissue fluid and return it to the blood.
• To defend the body against infection by:
  • Filtering foreign cells in lymph nodes.
  • Maturing and storing lymphocytes.
  • Destroying micro-organisms by engulfing them or by producing antibodies.

• To absorb and transport fatty acids and glycerol. Lymph vessels branch into lacteals that absorb these nutrients in the small intestine.
• To help with hearing and balance (the inner ear contains lymph).
