Téama
Dar liom, tá dhá léamh ar an dán seo.
According to me, there are two ways to read this poem.
I mo thuairim mhacánta, is é easpa saoirse an téama is tábhachtaí atá sa dán seo.
In my honest opinion, lack of freedom is the most important theme in this poem.
Baineann an dán leis an dochar a dhéanann easpa saoirse don ainmhí fiáin.
The poem is about the damage that lack of freedom does to a wild animal.
Tugann an file léargas dúinn ar shaol an ainmhí atá i ngéibheann agus taispeánann sí go mbriseann an daoirse spiorad an ainmhí.
The poet gives us an insight into the life of an animal who is in captivity and she shows that oppression breaks an animal's spirit.
Braitheann sé mar phríosúnach agus faoi smacht . Níl sé i gceannas ar a shaol féin.
He feels like a prisoner and under control. He is not in charge of his own life.
Cuimhníonn sé an am nuair a bhí sé saor, cumhachtach agus fiáin. Bhí sé in ann béiceadh in ard a chin is a ghutha.
He remembers the time when he was free, powerful and wild. He was able to roar at the top of his voice.
Is í an tsaoirse an rud is luachmhaire ar domhain, ach ní thuigtear sin go dtí go gcailltear í.
Freedom is the most valuable thing on earth, but one does not understand that until one loses it.
infoNote
Use the vocabulary from the 'Íomhánna' note to describe images one and two. Image one focuses on freedom. Image two focuses on oppression. The stark contrast between these images illustrates the central theme.
Ach, ar an lámh eile, b'fhéidir gur dán fáthchiallach é seo agus go bhfuil an file ag caint fúithi féin.
But, on the other hand, maybe this is an allegorical poem and that the poet is talking about herself.
infoNote
Allegorical: containing a moral or hidden meaning.
D'fhulaing an file as ailse**.** Seans go mbaineann an dán leis an easpa saoirse a bhraith an file agus í go dona tinn.
The poet suffered from cancer. There is a chance that the poem is about the lack of freedom that the poet felt when she was seriously ill.
Cosúil leis an ainmhí, bhí sí láidir, tráth, ach d'éirigh sí an-lag.
Like the animal, she was once strong, but she became very weak.
Chomh maith leis sin, cosúil leis an líon, bhí cuairteoirí aici an t-am ar fad agus mhothaigh sí srianta ina saol.
As well as that, like the lion, she had visitors all of the time and she felt restricted in her life.
Gan amhras, seasann an t-ainmhí d'aon duine a mhothaíonn teanntaithe ina shaol.
Without a doubt, the animal stands for anyone who feels trapped in their life.
