Opening Scene
The opening scene begins with a black screen accompanied by the sound of guitar strumming. The first shot reveals a close-up of the protagonist, Conor, as he plays his guitar.
The camera zooms out to show that he is sitting on his bed in his room, where a poster is displayed on the wall behind him and exam papers are scattered beside him.
In the background, the muffled voices of adults arguing can be heard. Conor reacts by slamming his bedroom door shut.
The camera then zooms in on him as he uses the insults from the argument as lyrics for an imaginary song.
The scene cuts to a black screen displaying the words 'Dublin 1984'.
A voice-over from a news anchor explains the emigration of young Irish people seeking better opportunities in London due to Ireland's deep recession.
The camera zooms out, revealing that the words appear on a television screen with a half-empty glass of wine on top of it. As the scene continues, the camera pans to show Conor sitting at the kitchen table, where there are empty dinner plates, a bottle of wine, a bottle of spirits, and everyone is wearing extra clothes to stay warm.
The scene continues with Conor's older brother, Brendan, entering the room and starting the conversation by saying, "This meeting has been called to order."
Conor's father is at the head of the table, smoking a cigarette. The camera focuses closely on him as he explains the family's difficult financial situation, which means they can no longer afford Conor's private school fees.
Conor must now attend the Christian Brothers, a local public school with the motto "Act Manly."
After this discussion, everyone leaves the room, and Conor is left alone, looking unhappy.
The scene cuts to the school crest on a building that reads "Synge Street."
It is Conor's first day at his new school. A dolly shot follows him as he walks in, accompanied by rock and roll music.
The camera shows the busy environment from Conor's point of view, capturing the chaotic atmosphere filled with unruly behaviour, like fighting in the school yard. The fast-paced music, with lyrics like "stay clean," adds to the hectic and crowded feeling.
infoNote
What is a dolly shot?
A dolly shot is a type of tracking shot, where the camera moves smoothly on wheels or tracks. It can move forwards, backwards, or side to side. This helps the camera follow a character or show more of a scene.
A low-angle shot shows Brother Baxter, a school authority figure, watching over the activities.
The scene cuts to a classroom where Conor is sitting at the front. He is the only student not misbehaving, and everything is seen from his perspective.
The other students ignore the teacher, who has his back to the class, and some are even smoking. Brother Baxter enters the classroom, and immediately, the students stand and greet him, restoring order.
Finally, the film title "Sing Street" appears on the screen in white letters against a black background. These scenes give a vivid introduction to Conor and set the tone for the film.
