Íomhánna

infoNote

The images also link to the contrast (codarsnacht). There are two contrasting images in this poem. If you are asked a question on 'codarsnacht' in the exam, simply describe the two images, and then compare them.

  • codarsnacht éifeachtach idir dhá thuiscint dhifriúla ar an bpósadh sa dán seo.
    • There is effective contrast between two different understandings of marriage in this poem.
  • Tá codarsnacht le feiceáil sa dán idir an fear agus an bhean agus idir an saol traidisiúnta agus an saol nua-aimseartha.
    • There is contrast to be seen between the man and the woman and between the traditional life and the modern life.
  • Bhí tuairimí difriúla acu faoin bpósadh agus faoin ról a bhí acu sa phósadh.
    • They had different opinions about marriage, and about their role in marriage.

Íomhá den Fhear

  • Sa chéad véarsa, cuirtear íomhá den fhear os ár gcomhair.
    • In the first verse, we are presented with an image of the man.
  • Ar an gcéad dul síos, is duine traidisiúnta agus seanfhaiseanta é. Teastaíonn pósadh traidisiúnta uaidh.
    • Firstly, he is a traditional and old fashioned person. He wants a traditional marriage.
  • Ba mhaith leis a bheith ina chonaí ina a cheantar dúchais, leis a bhean chéile ag tógail na bpaistí, ag déanamh oibre an tí agus ag tabhairt aire dóibh.
    • He would like to live in his native place, with his wife raising the children, doing the housework and taking care of them.

Íomhá den Bhean

  • Áfach, tá tuairimí difriúla ag an mbean. Sa dara véarsa, cuirtear íomhá den bhean os ár gcomhair.

    • However, the woman has different opinions. In the second verse, we are presented with images of the woman.
  • Ní raibh fonn uirthi a bheith ag brath ar an bhfear.

    • She did not want to depend on the man.
  • Bhí Cothrom na Féinne, údarás agus leath den saibhreas ag teastáil uirthi … 'Taobh den bhríste...Leath den chiste'

    • She wanted equality, authority and half of the wealth.
  • Bhí a hintinn féin aici agus bhí sí ag iarraidh a roghanna féin a dhéanamh.

    • She had her own mind and she was trying to make her own choices.
  • Ní raibh aon chaint faoi chlann agus an file ag déanamh cur síos ar an mbean.

    • There was no mention of family when the poet was describing the woman.
  • Bhí súil aici go mbeadh ainm in airde acu sa phobal, "meas na mílte".

    • She hoped that they would be respected in the community.
  • Ta an dán seo brónach mar, uair amhain, bhí siad I ngrá. Ach níor reitigh siad lena chéile mar bhí rudaí diffriúla ag teastail uatha. Mar sin, scar siad.

    • This poem is sad as, once, they were in love. But they did not get along with one another as they needed different things. And so, they separated.
