Are you water wise?

The kitchen, bathroom, and laundry are the areas in the home where huge amounts of water are used. Water consumption in these areas can be reduced using a few simple steps. In the summer months, outdoor water use causes overall water demand to increase. By using water wisely, you can help to reduce this. Here are some suggestions:

- Inside the house
  - Avoid running the tap continuously when rinsing dishes, brushing teeth, shaving, or washing your face.
  - Run dishwashers only when full.
  - Keep a container of water in the fridge to avoid running water to get it cold.
  - Only wash your clothes when you have a full load.
  - Don't use the toilet as a wastebasket; consider a dual-flush toilet.
  - Turn taps off tightly when done.

- Outside the house
  - Do not over-water your lawn. To stay healthy, most lawns only need about 2.5 cm of water per week.
  - Water the garden during the coolest part of the day, when water is less likely to evaporate.
  - Collect and use rainwater for irrigation, and reduce your reliance on mains water.
