The posters make use of a close-up, cropped view of the dolls’ faces as the layout. This graphic ensures that the eyes become the focal point. If these bright, vulnerable and pleading eyes seem to be directly aimed at the viewer, they engage with the viewer’s gaze and this direct eye contact forms an emotional link between the viewer and the poster. The black outline gives the appearance that it is a photograph.

The poster uses dolls to suggest young children are more likely to ‘speak out’ about their choices, ideas and sentiments. It highlights how vulnerable children are, as one can see the expressions on their faces that make them look innocent. This can be synonymous with children in the common emotional sphere of childhood. Their big eyes can convey emotion and innocence, putting the viewer in a position to feel caring or protective. The blurred or crushed faces show that not one voice should be heard. Removing their mouths shows the uncertainty of their effect where ‘voices’ have been silenced.

The words “SPEAK OUT” are in bold, black, sans serif text which totally punctuates the message about speaking out. It conveys urgency and brings attention to the importance of children expressing their feelings. The visual holds a strong message, ‘Speak Out!’ calling for action against whatever makes children feel silenced.

Victoria Yards by the developer Brian Green from Group 4.

Built as a laundry in the early 1900s, the property served the mining and cotton industry business. After the cotton monopoly stifled the area in decline, the heritage value of this space was rediscovered in 2010. Victoria Yards was visionary. It turns the ideas of sustainable regeneration into a vibrant community. The centre offers studios, workshops and galleries that cover about 30,000 square meters, including JustBlack.

Every month the studios and workshops open their doors, performers offer exhibitions and seminars and the variety of goods is offered by street food artisans. An open space allows for larger markets and fresh vegetables from the property and surrounding producers.

Allocate 2 for the designer’s work reflects social consciousness.

The project is socially responsible in various ways. The heritage buildings are beautifully maintained, and this allows for a sense of belonging. Furthermore, the high value of the artisan works produced symbolizes empowerment and sustainability, which frames urban regeneration as a broader goal.

2.2 (Allocate 2 marks)
By using South African traditional beadwork on well-known brands these brands are connected to our heritage and culture. These super-stressed designs (similar to the Pop Art style) of popular South African products encourage pride in our historical past and the need to buy local. Women from these communities are provided the employment opportunity to apply their beaded work to develop a personal style whilst applying it to a contemporary marketable product.
