What is a Preposition?

A preposition is a linking word that connects nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words in a sentence. Prepositions indicate relationships such as time, place, direction, position, and possession.


Types of Prepositions

1. Possession (Having)

  • Shows ownership or belonging.
  • Example: The books of the student.

2. Time

  • Indicates when something happens.

3. Direction

  • Shows movement towards something.
    • Example: He ran towards the taxi rank.

4. Position

  • Describes where something is located.
    • Example: She is under the table.

5. Place

  • Identifies a specific location.
    • Example: The shoes beneath the bed.

    • Correct: The guards had to appear in court.
