Setting
The Island
The story takes place on a tropical island in the Pacific Ocean after a plane crash.
The island is uninhabited, and the boys are the only survivors—there are no adults.
Key Features of the Island
Beach & Lagoon: A saltwater pool separated from the sea by a coral reef.
Jungle (Forest): Dense with fruit trees (e.g., bananas) and home to wildlife like butterflies, birds, and wild pigs.
Mountain of Pink Rock: Provides a vantage point for the boys to survey the island.
Weather: Extremely hot, making the coral reef appear to be floating at noon.
The "Scar"
A path of destruction in the jungle caused by the plane's crash landing.

Time Period & Background
The story is set in an imaginary future during a nuclear war.
Atom bombs have destroyed much of Europe.
Piggy suggests that most adults have been killed, and the boys may have been evacuated to safety before their plane was shot down.
