• Weather: Extremely hot, making the coral reef appear to be floating at noon.

The "Scar"

• A path of destruction in the jungle caused by the plane's crash landing.
• Trees and plants were destroyed, symbolising damage and disruption.

Time Period & Background

• The story is set in an imaginary future during a nuclear war.
• Atom bombs have destroyed much of Europe.
• Piggy suggests that most adults have been killed, and the boys may have been evacuated to safety before their plane was shot down.
