Definition

• A monologue is a speech delivered by a character alone on stage, expressing their thoughts and emotions directly to the audience.
• The purpose of a monologue is to reveal the character's innermost feelings and motivations.

• Mr M is alone on stage, delivering a monologue to the audience.
• He reflects on life and the philosophy of Confucius, identifying himself as a Confucian.
• He emphasises that learning and thought are interdependent.

• He compares the hope in his heart to a hungry animal that must feed on its young to survive.
