Themes
Truth and Reconciliation
Reconciliation is the process of finding peace after conflict by understanding the truth and forgiving past wrongs.
It involves both apologising for harm caused and letting go of anger to move forward.
In the play, Sipho struggles with personal reconciliation while also questioning the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and its effectiveness.
Sibling Rivalry
Sibling rivalry refers to jealousy and competition between brothers and sisters.
Sipho feels that his father always favoured Themba, creating resentment.
Example: Sipho was forced to give his wire bus to Themba, showing their unequal treatment.
Quote: "My father openly favoured Themba and it hurt." (Act 2, Scene 1)
Being the Victim vs Taking Responsibility
When people experience hardship, they may see themselves as victims rather than taking control of their lives.
Sipho blames Themba for many of his struggles and losses.
By the end of the play, Sipho realises he must take responsibility for his future rather than blaming his brother.
Traditional vs Modern Culture
Culture is shaped by beliefs, customs, and values passed down through generations.
The play contrasts traditional African culture with modern, materialistic values, shown through Mandisa and Thando's differing views.
Example: Mandisa, who grew up in London, challenges traditional expectations, while Thando respects them.
Quote: "This is not London. There are rules in this house." (Act 1, Scene 2)
Exile
The play explores the tension between those who stayed in South Africa during apartheid and those who went into exile.
Themba's exile is a major source of conflict, as Sipho resents him for leaving.
Political Elites vs The Ordinary Person
The theme highlights how politicians fail to serve the ordinary people who helped put them in power.
Sipho is angry that he was denied a promotion because of his age, despite his contributions.
Quote: "I paid for this freedom. I paid with my son's life. My brother died in exile. They must never forget the little people like me." (Act 2, Scene 1)
These themes help to explore issues of justice, forgiveness, and identity in post-apartheid South Africa.
