Mr Gabriel John Utterson
A Victorian gentleman and lawyer in London.

Dr Henry Jekyll
A respected doctor and scientist.
Appears charitable and decent but leads a secret life.
Believes in dual nature – that everyone has both good and evil inside them.
Experiments to separate his evil side, creating Mr Hyde.
Feels remorse for Hyde's actions but cannot resist transforming.
Ultimately, his addiction to Hyde leads to his death.
Mr Edward Hyde
Jekyll's dark side is brought out by drinking a mysterious potion.
Represents sin, evil, and reckless behaviour.
Violent and dangerous – responsible for the murder of Sir Danvers Carew.
Described as deformed and ugly, compared to a troglodyte (caveman).

Mr Richard Enfield
Utterson's distant cousin and a typical Victorian gentleman.
First to mention Hyde after witnessing him trample a young girl.
Dr Hastie Lanyon
A close friend of Jekyll and a respected doctor.
Disapproves of Jekyll's scientific experiments, calling them "unscientific balderdash".
The only person to witness Jekyll's transformation into Hyde.
His shock leads to his death.
Poole
Dr Jekyll's servant for over 20 years.
Loyal and reliable, but becomes concerned about Jekyll's strange behaviour.
Seeks help from Mr Utterson.
Bradshaw
Jekyll's footman, responsible for guarding the back door of Jekyll's laboratory.
Mr Guest
Utterson's clerk and a handwriting expert.
