1. Time Formats

Time can be expressed in different formats:

  • 12-hour format: Uses a.m. (before midday) and p.m. (after midday).
    • Example: 8:00 a.m. (morning), 8:00 p.m. (evening).
  • 24-hour format: No a.m./p.m. Used in timetables, digital clocks, and schedules.
    • Example: 20:00 = 8:00 p.m.

Hundred Hours Format

  • Used in the military and aviation.
  • The colon (:) is replaced with "h".
    • Example: 20:00 is written as 20h00.

Convert the following times:

  • 3:56 p.m.15:56

3. Converting Units of Time

Time conversions:

  • 60 seconds = 1 minute
  • 60 minutes = 1 hour
  • 24 hours = 1 day
  • 7 days = 1 week
  • 365 days52 weeks = 12 months = 1 year

  1. 140 seconds into minutes and seconds:
  • 140 ÷ 60 = 2 minutes and 20 seconds.
  • Answer: 2 min 20 sec.

  • 138 ÷ 60 = 2 hours and 18 minutes.
  • Answer: 2 hrs 18 min.

  1. Train journey takes 34 hours. How many days and hours is this?
  • 34 ÷ 24 = 1 full day and 10 hours left.
  • Answer: 1 day 10 hours.
  1. Flight to China takes 38 hours. Convert to days and hours.
  • 38 ÷ 24 = 1 full day and 14 hours left.
  • Answer: 1 day 14 hours.
